Acupuncture FAQ

Acupuncture needle being placed in hand.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine, sterile, one time use needles into strategic points on the body. It circulates and balances the energy, leading to healing and the diminishing/resolving of symptoms.

FAQs

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people are surprised by how gentle the process is and how incredibly relaxed they feel once they have rested with the needles (acupuncture creates an endorphin release - hello feel good hormones!). You won’t feel some needles go in, and others you may feel initially.

How many treatments will I need?

This is determined by several factors, including the severity of your symptoms, how long you have had the issue, and your general health status. While it varies from person to person, on average patients feel significant relief in 6 to 12 treatments scheduled 1-2x/week initially.

How can I prepare for my acupuncture treatment?

Make sure to eat before an acupuncture appointment, do not come on an empty stomach. That’s it! Just come and enjoy.

What other modalities do you offer as part of your acupuncture treatment?

Aroma-Acupoint therapy, Cupping, and Gua Sha are all available as part of your acupuncture treatment.

What is Aroma-Acupoint Therapy?

Aroma-Acupoint therapy is the application of therapeutic, high grade essential oils to different acupuncture points on the body. It is like a dance between the spirit of the essential oil and the acupuncture point, which serves as a gateway to the body. This combination of strategic oil on strategic acupuncture point is far more effective than smelling an oil alone. Aroma-acupoint therapy is incredibly healing for the mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies and helps to reset our nervous systems. In my experience, energetically sensitive people love this the most! And it smells delicious!

What is Cupping?

Cupping is the use of special plastic or glass cups on the skin to create suction to relieve pain & inflammation, induce relaxation, loosen tight muscles, and improve blood flow. You can expect to have red-purple cupping marks anywhere from 3 days to 1 week after treatment. Typically the tighter/more congested an area is, the darker the cupping mark.

What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha is scraping the skin with a gua sha tool or bottle cap. It is extremely effective in increasing circulation, loosening tight muscles, improving blood flow, and relieving pain and inflammation. Like cupping it will leave red-purple marks anywhere from 3 days to 1 week after treatment. Typically the tighter/more congested an area is, the darker the mark. It sounds strange but it feels fantastic, especially for clients with disc/spine issues.
